What’s Your Walking Score?
Really I see this neat little web app as being a great tool in househunting. After you enter your address, it calculates distances to things like grocery stores, schools, bars, restaurants, and hardware stores, then uses an algorithm to calculate your “walking score”. They admit on the site that it’s not perfect (they didn’t pick my closest book store, park, or pharmacy), and they use “as the crow flies” distances which might work in favor of those curvy suburban developments, but it’s a fun tool nonetheless.
I ended up with a 67, but if you correct all of the errors, I’m sure I’d be well within thier range of 70-90, which classifies my spot as, “Very Walkable: It’s possible to get by without owning a car.”
I also thought this little map from the site really told the story about walkability.
The location on the left has a Walk Score of 82, while the location on the right has a Walk Score of 9. A 9 puts you firmly into the 0-25 range, which translates as, “Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!”

I scored an 85 but as a resident of the Short North it doesn’t really surprise me that it was so high.
Scored a 75 from Delaware Avenue, V Village seems to be pretty walker freiendly!
I emailed the folks who run the website about some of the errors and got a quick reply. They adjusted the Google queries that they are using to populate the list and it got to be much more accurate. I’m now clocking in at an 86!
